WHAT IS AN AGRITURISMO? WHY YOU SHOULD TRY THEM!

If you really want to live an authentic local experience wherever you are in Italy, you should definitely try an “Agriturismo”! As you may imagine, an agriturismo is the combination between agriculture and tourism. It is an ideal option for lovers of nature, the outdoors, and food, and is by far the most sustainable option as far as tourism goes. 

The concept was born as a way for farmers to gain extra income by offering visitors an authentic look at country life in Italy. They also serve an important purpose meeting the newly found needs of consumers, now much more attentive to the food they eat, how it's produced, and where it comes from. While also showcasing and promoting the preservation of local artisanal food products and traditions tied to their production. 

The concept is simple, an agricultural entrepreneur (often with some experience in hospitality) offers food, most if not all of which should be grown and produced on site, and accommodation at his estate. During harvest time some of them even offer free accommodations, in exchange for labour, of course.

Recreational and sightseeing activities are often offered, hiking and trekking excursions, horseback riding, visits to local museums or sites (especially if located close to large cities). Other services and amenities that you often find are a spa, saunas, and pools.
